Where it comes from
Two people working one body is Ayurvedic before it is anything else. Synchronised abhyanga has been performed in pairs in Kerala for centuries, the timing held by practice rather than instruction. Western spas took the synchrony and left the ritual behind.
The technique
They take a side each and stay off one another's ground. The opening is matched stroke for stroke, followable on purpose, and it stops being so inside ten minutes. After that the timing is deliberately uneven, and nothing is counted out loud. Pressure is held moderate, because two sets of hands at full weight is more than anyone asks for twice.
What to expect
Both arrive together in the same window, 20 to 30 minutes anywhere in the centre. They start mirrored, the same stroke on both sides, then split. Somewhere in the first ten minutes the pattern stops being followable. Pressure can stay light and still overwhelm, because there is twice as much of it.
